This FAQ page is designed to help you understand more about the FACEIT verification system and answer any data privacy-related questions you may have about verification. We want to make sure you have all the information you need to make an informed decision about verification and why it's important. 

Daon's website informed me the process was completed, why did my verification fail?

The confirmation on Daon's website doesn't mean the verification was successful, it means your documents have successfully been received. The outcome of the verification still needs to be processed. 

Why the FACEIT ID verification system?

Our ultimate goal with verification is to instil trust in the community and our users by ensuring that their accounts, stats, and rankings are legitimate. We want to create an environment where achievements are earned fairly and every match played is genuine, without the need to worry about smurfs, boosters, or other forms of multi-account abuse.

These should be the pillars of every legit sportive competition, but we can all agree that today they are very difficult to uphold across matchmaking and esports competitions.

What is the FACEIT ID verification system?

FACEIT ID verification system is a free and optional feature available to everyone. To deliver a fast, secure, and user-friendly ID verification experience, we partnered with Daon, an industry leader in identity verification with over 20 years of experience and 500 successful deployments, verifying a staggering 250 million accounts daily.  

It involves the process of confirming the identity and personal information of players to their account on the platform to ensure account accountability.  The verification process is a straightforward process that is designed to protect the integrity of the platform and ensure a fair playing field for all users. 

It involves four key steps - 

• Scanning the QR code
• Providing a photo of yourself with your face visible
• Adding an identification document
• Submitting

How will FACEIT ID verification affect my experience on FACEIT?

The ID verification system presented today is the first of many product releases that will go live this year as part of a general overhaul of FACEIT, bringing important improvements to our matchmaking, Elo and rank system, UX, web/app performance and more.

There are three key pieces of information you need to know to understand how the system will work and how it will impact your experience on FACEIT in the future:

• To verify yourself, you will need to follow a fast and secure 4-step process requiring a smartphone, face capture and original Identity documentation. Upon successful verification, you will receive a badge that you’ll be able to show off to everyone that you’re legit along with several boosts in terms of visibility in search, discovery and other social-related features on FACEIT.
• In the future, verification status will soon be required to access specific competitions and part of the experiences on FACEIT. To mention a few examples, players participating in official competitions such as open qualifiers may be required to verify their account to participate in the competition
• For certain accounts, verification will be enforced to keep accessing the FACEIT service. This new layer of verification will create a much higher barrier to entry, mitigating malicious behaviors based on the consolidation of multiple data points being used, particularly concerning boosting services and black markets in the past months. While we do understand that this trigger enforcement may also affect some benevolent cases, we believe that a more aggressive direction is needed to recreate trust in our community 

How do I verify my account?

To verify yourself, you will need to follow a fast and secure 4-step process requiring a smartphone, face capture and original Identity documentation.

It involves four key steps - 

• Visit the verification page in your FACEIT account settings.
• You will be asked for a face capture, a multi-factor facial recognition solution based on a simple selfie.
  NOTE: As you start the process, please ensure you have the correct country selected that matches the document you will be using for verification. 
• You will be asked to scan your document ID.
• You have successfully verified yourself. We might ask to re-check your identity in the future using a face capture method, in case our system flags you for any suspicious activities. (e.g. account selling, using the identity of another person)

Is the FACEIT ID Verification system mandatory?

No, the FACEIT ID Verification system is not mandatory. It is a free and optional feature available to all players. However, in the future:

• Verification status will soon be required to access specific competitions and part of the experiences on FACEIT. To mention a few examples, players participating in official competitions such as open qualifiers may be required to verify their account to participate in the competition
• For certain accounts, verification will be enforced to keep accessing the FACEIT service. This new layer of verification will create a much higher barrier to entry, mitigating malicious behaviors based on the consolidation of multiple data points being used, particularly concerning boosting services and black markets in the past months. While we do understand that this trigger enforcement may also affect some benevolent cases, we believe that a more aggressive direction is needed to recreate trust in our community 
• verification status will soon be required to access specific competitions and experiences on FACEIT, such as official competitions like open qualifiers.

Where is my data going to be stored?

Your ID Verification Information is stored in Daon's European Datacenters. On the FACEIT database, we only store that the person has been verified. None of your ID verification data will be stored on FACEIT.

Why are you asking for my documents and/or a photo? 

Face capture or/and identification documents capture is necessary to ensure that the person creating the account is a real person and on their main account. Verification adds a layer of protection against identity usurpation, fake accounts, and fraud risks. and adds an extra layer of protection to your account at no cost to you.

What stops me from deleting my account and verification and making a new one - verifying myself again (smurf)?

FACEIT doesn't store or process your Identity Verification data. These are stored by our data processor; Daon, on their European Datacenters.
Should you choose to delete your FACEIT account, there is a retention period that allows us to keep enough anonymized encrypted data which will prevent the new account from being verified with the same information.
If you wish to have your Identity Verification information removed, please reach out to our Customer Support Team who will review on a case-by-case basis.

What information do I need to provide for identity verification?

You will need to provide some form of government-issued identification, such as a passport, driver’s license or national ID. You will also be required to provide a photo.

Can I verify more than one account?

You can only verify one account. 

What is the difference between face capture and document capture?

DOCUMENT CAPTURE

This is a four-step multi-factor process requiring a smartphone and original Identity documentation.

As this process is more thorough in confirming your identity, it will only require rechecks if we need to double-check your identity, such as in the case where we suspect an account has been sold. A recheck can be completed via FACE CAPTURE instead of having to rescan your original document.

This is a three-step multi-factor process requiring only a smartphone.

It’s a multi-factor facial recognition solution based on a simple selfie.

This process will require regular rechecks to maintain the integrity of your account.

There may be a short wait once your verification is submitted. Verification times may vary depending on the volume of requests, but typically take no more than a few minutes to a few hours.

I’m under 18 years of age! How do I verify?

All underage players can now verify themselves. Please read our Underage FAQ for more information.

Will I need to re-verify my identity in the future?

You may be asked to re-check your identity in the future using a face capture method if the system flags your account for any suspicious activity. Rechecks will be more frequent on FACE CAPTURE than on DOCUMENT CAPTURE, ensuring the trust in your account is preserved.

What happens if someone hacks my account and my account is verified?

If your verified account has been compromised, rest assured that our dedicated Customer Support team is here to assist you. Simply reach out to us and provide the necessary information, and we will conduct a thorough investigation to help you reclaim your account and get you back in the game.

Why has this update taken so long?

At FACEIT, we wanted to make sure this was the right route for us to take and we also wanted to make sure the process would be secure, efficient and meaningful in terms of the benefits it would allow us to give the community on FACEIT.

What is the difference between the gold verification badge and the white one?

When it comes to verification badges, there are two new shiny variants: the white and the golden variety, that serve as symbols of legitimacy and trustworthiness. The White Verification badge is awarded to everyone who has successfully completed the verification process.

The Golden Verification badge is awarded to top pros, content creators and community leaders to ensure it’s easier to recognize their profiles and protect them from impersonation.

What is the impact of changing my gamertag or nickname on my verification status?

Good news! Changing your gamertag or nickname will not affect your verification status in any way. You can rest assured that your verification will remain valid and intact regardless of any alterations you make to your username.

Does verification really solve smurfing?

Smurfing is a tough problem to solve and we’ll be taking a multifaceted approach. Verifying your account does not eliminate smurfing altogether, but it plays a crucial role in minimizing its prevalence and represents the first step in our comprehensive approach to combat this behavior on FACEIT.

By ensuring that each account is uniquely tied to an individual, we can create a fair and competitive environment for all players, where everyone has an equal opportunity to showcase their skills and progress.

This release marks an important first step towards a general overhaul of FACEIT happening later this year which will impact many parts of your experience in our matchmaking, tournaments, UI/UX, website/app performance, anti-cheat, and more.

DATA FAQ

What if I don’t feel comfortable sharing my sensitive identity documentation?

For those who don’t want to share their ID document, we will soon be offering the option to only do a multi-factor face capture verification that will not require any form of document ID. We’ll share more details about this and how it’s going to work in our next update.

What is Identity Document capture and Face capture and is it safe to do?

Yes, both verification methods are very secure and utilize advanced encryption methods to produce your documents and information.

What if I lose or change my device?

In the event of a device change, it may be necessary to repeat the verification process as a device fingerprint is taken during each verification process to ensure security.

What happens if my identification information is not accepted for verification?

If your identification information is not accepted for verification, you may need to provide additional information or documents to complete the verification process.
