How do ladders work?

What are ladders

A ladder is a competition with a rank system to reward the most active and winning players in the FACEIT matchmaking. Ladders are a leader board competition type where gamers compete for points against each other where at the end the top players win points or prizes.

Ladders can have different duration's, ranging from a couple of hours, to days or months.

Unranked vs Ranked ladders

Now that we know what ladders are, it's important to distinguish between unranked and ranked ladders.

When playing an unranked ladder, your performance does not carry forward to other ladders. This means that if you're on top of the leader board, you'll win prizes, but your performance does not carry forward to other ladders.

Ranked ladders in contrary are only available in our subscriber only leagues. Here your performance does carry forward to the next league edition, commonly monthly. This means players will rank up / down every month based on their cumulative performance from the past ladder. For more information on ranked ladders, have a look at "How does FACEIT's league system work?".

Ladder points are earned and lost on the basis of two main variables:

1. Skill level of your opponents

The greater your opponents skill level compared to yours, the greater the amount of points you will earn if you win. If you lose, you will lose less points. The lower the skill level of the opponent, the vice versa applies.

2. Bonus pool

Each day since the start of the ladder players are awarded additional bonus points. These increase the number of the ladder points earned in case of victory until they are totally used. Each time you play the amount of bonus points you could have earned is detracted from your bonus pool no matter the result of the match.

Example: Each day you gain a bonus of 10 points that will be spent during the first matches you play. So, let's say that you don't play for three days. Each of these day you gain 10 points for a total of 30 points. At the fourth day, you come back and start to play. In your bonus pool, you have a total of 40 points.

Now, let's say that you start playing and you get matched with other four people. Now these four people have been playing daily and had already finished their daily bonus of 10 points. You win the first match and considering the elo of the two teams, all the players of your team should have received +12 points. However, you have your bonus still available and thus instead of getting the 12 points, you get, for example, 18 points.

The number of points you would have received, excluding the bonus pool component, is linked to the skill level of your opponents. This happens because we believe that players should be rewarded according to the winning chances they have.

When are the ladders paid out?

This depends on the specific ladder you are playing in. Most ladders on our platform pay out a few hours after they end. They do not pay out right away as there might still be ongoing matches that would still have players who are in the ladder. This mean they would have points from that live match that was started before the ladder finished and awarded to the ladder still.

Community night ladders are the only ones we do not pay out for up to six weeks. The reason being for this is that our Community nights are sponsored with third party prize providers thus they could be multiple ladders that are run over the course of a month and these prizes are paid out all at once by the Sponsor. The other reason these ladders are not paid out is we check all these ladders to ensure the players playing in them are not abusing our polices in order to win cool prizes on our platform.
